The Hand Grip Dynamometer test measures the maximum isometric strength of the hand and forearm muscles using a calibrated hand dynamometer.
What This Test Measures
This test measures grip strength, which is an indicator of overall upper body strength and has been correlated with general health status.
Equipment Needed
- Calibrated hand grip dynamometer
- Recording device
How to Perform the Test
- Adjust the dynamometer handle to fit your hand size - the middle phalanx (second joint) of your fingers should rest against the handle.
- Stand with your arm at your side, elbow bent at 90 degrees.
- Hold the dynamometer in your hand with your wrist in a neutral position (thumb facing up).
- When ready, squeeze the dynamometer with maximum effort for about 3-5 seconds.
- Record the reading in kilograms or pounds.
- Rest for 30-60 seconds, then repeat for a total of three trials with each hand.
- Calculate the average of the three trials for each hand.
Tips for Best Results
- Maintain proper posture throughout the test - stand straight with shoulders back.
- Don't allow the dynamometer to touch your body or any other object during the test.
- Squeeze with a smooth, continuous effort rather than a jerky motion.
- Breathe normally during the test - don't hold your breath.
- Test both hands, even if you're primarily interested in your dominant hand.
Interpreting Your Results
Your grip strength is compared to normative data based on age, gender, and hand dominance. Generally, the dominant hand is about 10% stronger than the non-dominant hand. Grip strength is often used as a predictor of overall health and functional capacity.
