Shoulder Elevation Test

Flexibility

The Shoulder Elevation Test measures the flexibility and mobility of the shoulder joint, particularly in elevation and external rotation.

What This Test Measures

This test measures the range of motion in your shoulder joints, which is important for many daily activities and sports that involve overhead movements.

Equipment Needed

  • Measuring tape or ruler
  • Partner to assist with measurement

How to Perform the Test

  1. Lie face down on a flat surface with arms extended overhead.
  2. Hold a measuring stick or ruler with both hands, palms facing each other.
  3. Keeping your chin on the floor and arms straight, raise your arms as high as possible.
  4. Have a partner measure the vertical distance from the floor to the bottom of the stick.
  5. Perform three attempts and record the best result.

Tips for Best Results

  • Keep your chin and chest in contact with the floor throughout the test.
  • Maintain straight arms - don't bend at the elbows.
  • Relax your shoulder muscles before attempting to elevate.
  • Warm up thoroughly before testing to increase mobility and prevent injury.
  • Focus on a smooth, controlled movement rather than jerking or bouncing.

Interpreting Your Results

Your shoulder elevation height is compared to normative data based on age and gender. Greater heights indicate better shoulder flexibility and mobility. Limited shoulder mobility may affect performance in swimming, throwing, and other overhead activities.
