The Stork Balance Test measures static balance ability by testing how long you can maintain balance while standing on one leg in a specific position.
What This Test Measures
This test measures your static balance — the ability to maintain equilibrium while stationary in a challenging position.
Equipment Needed
Flat, non-slip surface
Stopwatch or timer
How to Perform the Test
Remove shoes for better proprioceptive feedback (optional).
Stand on a flat, non-slip surface.
Place hands on hips.
Lift one foot and place the toes of that foot against the knee of the supporting leg.
When ready, raise the heel of the supporting foot to stand on the ball of the foot.
Start the timer when the heel is raised.
Maintain this position as long as possible.
Stop the timer when any of the following occur: the supporting foot moves, the raised foot loses contact with the knee, the heel touches the ground, or hands come off hips.
Perform three trials on each leg and record the best time for each.
Tips for Best Results
Focus your eyes on a fixed point in front of you.
Engage your core muscles to help maintain balance.
Practice the position without timing first to get comfortable.
Keep your breathing steady and relaxed.
Test both legs and record results for each.
Interpreting Your Results
Your time is compared to normative data based on age and gender. Longer times indicate better static balance. This test is useful for identifying balance asymmetries between legs.
