Stork Balance Test

Balance

The Stork Balance Test measures static balance ability by testing how long you can maintain balance while standing on one leg in a specific position.

What This Test Measures

This test measures your static balance, proprioception, and postural control.

Equipment Needed

  • Flat, non-slip surface
  • Stopwatch or timer

How to Perform the Test

  1. Remove shoes for better proprioceptive feedback (optional).
  2. Stand on a flat, non-slip surface.
  3. Place hands on hips.
  4. Lift one foot and place the toes of that foot against the knee of the supporting leg.
  5. When ready, raise the heel of the supporting foot to stand on the ball of the foot.
  6. Start the timer when the heel is raised.
  7. Maintain this position as long as possible without:
  8. - Moving the supporting foot from its starting position
  9. - Letting the raised foot lose contact with the knee
  10. - Letting the heel of the supporting foot touch the ground
  11. - Taking hands off hips
  12. Stop the timer when any of these occur.
  13. Perform three trials on each leg and record the best time for each.

Tips for Best Results

  • Focus on a fixed point at eye level to help maintain balance.
  • Practice the starting position before beginning the timed test.
  • Ensure the testing environment is free from distractions.
  • Breathe normally throughout the test.
  • Test both legs, even if you're primarily interested in your dominant leg.

Interpreting Your Results

Your balance time is compared to normative data based on age and gender. Longer times indicate better static balance ability. Poor balance may indicate issues with proprioception, vestibular function, or neuromuscular control, and may increase fall risk.
