The 20m Shuttle Test, commonly known as the Beep Test or PACER test, is a multi-stage fitness test that assesses aerobic capacity and endurance.
What This Test Measures
This test measures your cardiovascular fitness and ability to recover from repeated high-intensity efforts.
Equipment Needed
20-meter marked course
Beep test audio track
Speaker
Cones to mark the course
How to Perform the Test
Set up a 20-meter course with cones marking each end.
Play the beep test audio, which provides a countdown and then begins the test.
Run from one end of the 20m course to the other, reaching the line before the next beep sounds.
At each beep, turn and run back to the opposite end.
As the test progresses, the time between beeps decreases, requiring you to run faster.
Continue until you can no longer reach the line before the beep sounds twice in a row.
Record the level and shuttle number at which you stopped.
Tips for Best Results
Place your foot on or over the line at each end of the course.
Maintain a steady pace and don't start too fast.
Use the full time between beeps in the early stages to conserve energy.
Turn efficiently at each end to save energy.
Interpreting Your Results
Your score is the level and number of shuttles completed. This can be converted to an estimated VO2 max value using standardized tables. Higher levels indicate better aerobic fitness.
