400m Run Test

Aerobic Endurance

The 400m Run Test is a middle-distance running assessment that measures a combination of aerobic endurance and anaerobic capacity.

What This Test Measures

This test measures your ability to maintain a high speed over a moderate distance, combining both aerobic and anaerobic energy systems.

Equipment Needed

  • 400m track or measured course
  • Stopwatch or timer
  • Recording device (optional)

How to Perform the Test

  1. Find a 400m track or accurately measured course.
  2. Warm up thoroughly with light jogging, dynamic stretches, and a few short sprints.
  3. Position yourself at the starting line.
  4. Start the timer and run the 400m distance as fast as possible.
  5. Record your time upon completion.
  6. Cool down with a slow walk and stretching.

Tips for Best Results

  • Pace yourself - the 400m is too long for an all-out sprint from start to finish.
  • Start strong but controlled for the first 200m.
  • Maintain form even as fatigue sets in during the final 100m.
  • Practice proper breathing techniques to maximize oxygen intake.

Interpreting Your Results

Your time is compared to normative data based on age and gender. Faster times indicate better anaerobic endurance and speed endurance capacity.
