The Illinois Agility Test is a standardized assessment that measures the ability to accelerate, decelerate, turn in different directions, and run at different angles.
What This Test Measures
This test measures overall agility, including speed, body control, and the ability to change direction quickly while maintaining balance.
Equipment Needed
- 8 cones
- Stopwatch or timing system
- Flat, non-slip surface
- Measuring tape
How to Perform the Test
- Set up the course: Place four cones forming a rectangle 10m long by 5m wide. Place four more cones in the center of the rectangle, spaced 3.3m apart.
- Start lying face down with hands at shoulder level behind the starting line.
- On the 'Go' command, get up as quickly as possible and sprint through the course following the prescribed pattern:
- - Sprint to the first center cone and weave up and back through the four center cones
- - Sprint to the far corner cone
- - Sprint back to the finish line
- Time stops when you cross the finish line.
- Perform two attempts with adequate rest between trials (2-4 minutes).
- Record the fastest time.
Tips for Best Results
- Practice the course pattern before timing to ensure you follow the correct route.
- Take tight turns around the cones without touching or knocking them over.
- Lean into turns to maintain speed and balance.
- Use short, quick steps when changing direction.
- Keep your center of gravity low during directional changes.
Interpreting Your Results
Your Illinois Agility Test time is compared to normative data based on age, gender, and athletic background. Faster times indicate greater agility. This test is particularly relevant for sports that require quick changes of direction, such as soccer, basketball, and tennis.
