Aerobic Endurance

One Mile Run

The One Mile Run (1.609 km) is the cardio event of the 2026 Presidential Physical Fitness Test. Students earn the Presidential Award by meeting the published age- and sex-specific time benchmark.

What This Test Measures

  • Aerobic endurance and cardiorespiratory fitness over a sustained one-mile effort. The mile is a long-standing benchmark in school PE and is the cardio option (alongside the 20m Beep Test) in the 2026 Presidential Fitness Test.

Equipment Needed

  • A measured 1-mile course, or a 400m running track (4 laps)
  • Stopwatch or timer (or the Fitness Tests app)
  • Cones or markers for the start/finish line if not using a track

How to Perform the Test

  1. Warm up with 5–10 minutes of light jogging and dynamic stretches. Non-negotiable — cold-starting a max-effort mile risks injury.
  2. Mark out a 1-mile course on a flat surface, or use a standard 400m track (4 complete laps in lane 1 or 2).
  3. Position yourself at the starting line.
  4. Start the timer and run the mile at a sustainable max pace. Walking is permitted but try to maintain a jog.
  5. Stop the timer as your chest crosses the finish line.
  6. Cool down with a 3-minute walk and gentle stretching.

2026 Presidential Award Benchmark

  • The Presidential Physical Fitness Award benchmarks for the One Mile Run vary by sex and age (e.g. Boys age 10: 7:57; Girls age 14: 7:59). Full table at fitnesstests.app/presidential-fitness-test/standards.
  • Students choose either the One Mile Run or the 20m Beep Test for the Cardio category — they don't need to do both.

Tips for Best Results

  • Pace evenly. Even or negative splits beat a sprint start.
  • Know your target lap time before you start. On a 400m track, divide your goal mile time by 4.
  • Breathe rhythmically and maintain good running form.
  • Be well-rested and hydrated; perform the test when fresh, not at the end of a hard workout.

Interpreting Your Results

  • Your time is rated against age- and sex-specific normative bands. For the 2026 Presidential Award, hitting the published benchmark in your bracket plus one Core and one Upper-Body event qualifies the student. The Fitness Tests app applies this rule automatically.
